Overview

Difficult conversations are usually taught as a communication problem: choose better words, listen more actively, structure the exchange well. But communication skill can't overcome a dysregulated nervous system - under threat-state physiology, access to nuance, patience, and perspective-taking narrows fast.

This session introduces regulation as the prerequisite skill difficult conversations actually require, teaching leaders to recognize their own physiological state before they speak and to build the capacity to stay regulated when the conversation gets hard.

Why you should Attend

Most communication training teaches people what to say but rarely addresses the state they're saying it from. If you're dysregulated when a hard conversation starts, the "right words" won't be enough. Tone, timing, and reactivity will undercut them the best intentions to mask your internal state. Leaders who skip this step get blindsided in negotiations, feedback sessions, and conflict, wondering why a well-planned conversation still went sideways.

Areas Covered in the Session

  • Why communication frameworks fail when the nervous system is dysregulated
  • Recognizing your own early signs of threat-state activation in real time
  • The order-of-operations shift: regulate first, then communicate
  • A brief, usable regulation technique for the moments right before (or during) a hard conversation
  • How to read escalation in the other person and adjust your own state in response
  • Building regulation as a repeatable skill, not a one-time fix
  • Practicing skills to calm your brain down so you can calm others' brains down for more effective engagements
